Defining arts, culture and creativity
At ANA, we adopt a broad and inclusive definition of arts, culture and creativity in Australia.
Arts, culture and creativity includes:
-
attending arts, cultural and creative events
-
visiting arts, cultural and creative venues
-
creating or performing something
-
engaging with arts, culture and creative content in your home.
Our definition also includes activities performed in industries and occupations that may be less obvious, such as advertising, design and architecture.
In adopting this definition, we acknowledge that the term ‘culture’ has many different meanings to people and communities in Australia.
In our work, we use the term ‘culture’ to explore ways of living and forms of expression that we share as Australians or that we share with other members of our social groups.
Our definition of arts, culture and creativity has been informed by both Australian and global definitions of industries and activities, including:
-
the Australian Government’s Bureau of Communications, Arts and Regional Research (BCARR) ‘Culture and Creative Activity in Australia’ accounts
-
the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) industry divisions of ‘Arts and Recreation Services’ and ‘Information Media and Telecommunications’
-
the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development’s (OECD) term ‘Cultural and Creative Sectors’
-
the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development’s (UNCTAD) definition of creative industries
-
the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) Framework for Cultural Statistics.
